“How can you be homosexual if you are married to a man?” Apparently that’s a question fitness instructor Bethany Meyers is asking everyone. The. Time.

Bethany, that is, identifies as gay. If you are not familiar with the term of sexuality, people who identify as weird often have the impression that the terms lesbian, homosexual, and bisexual are too limiting and have cultural connotations that do not apply to them, for example THANK YOU. Now Bethany is explaining via social media how it is possible for her to be gay and still married to a man.

“The person you have partnered with does not determine your sexual orientation”

“I strongly believe in the importance of allowing people to ask questions in a safe space where they will not be seen as ignorant or politically incorrect. So for that matter, that safe space can be here, ”she wrote on Instagram, next to pictures of her and Nico.

“The person you are dating or partnering with does not determine your sexual orientation (if it did, bisexuality / pansexuality wouldn’t exist),” she continued. “Just because a woman marries a woman doesn’t make her a lesbian (ie Cynthia Nixon).”

Bethany said if she were to put herself on a scale, with zero being straight and six being “rainbow,” she would be a five. Nico, who prefers to use the pronoun ‘they’, “happens to be so special, they achieved ‘life partner status’ by using my remaining 1,” Bethany wrote.

They also have a polyamorous relationship, which, she says, helps. “It works for me because our relationship is open, which means the other part of me that is attracted to women, can exercise. I’m lucky, I know, “she wrote.

Gender identity is also important to them, she says. “I don’t know if I (or my partner) would label myself as strictly ‘female’ and label them as strictly ‘male’,” she said.

“It probably sounds less bizarre for the millennium than it actually is. If you think boys should have the freedom to be feminine and girls should have the freedom to be masculine, the collapse of the concept of gender has already started. So when you ask, “How is a woman married to a man, homosexual,” I dispute that gender labels don’t apply. ”

Bethany and Nico regularly answer questions about their relationship, and she wrote an essay for WomensHealthMag.com earlier this year on why their love works. Although they love each other and are family, “we realized early enough that we couldn’t meet all of each other’s needs, especially when we lived so far apart”, a- she declared. “So we got really honest about dating other people and letting those people come into other people’s lives.”

The polyamorous couple maintained this relational mindset, even after they got married March 9 of this year.

In her latest Instagram post, Bethany wrote that, just like when they got married, she and Nico recently wore gender ensembles to the GLAAD Awards, as “an expression of our ever-changing, ever-changing and really flowing identities.”

But, she pointed out, many of the couple’s transgender and non-binary friends and “allies” are unable to do so and are regularly harassed and abused for their gender identities. “So to everyone who speaks freely or works on it,” she concluded her post, “shine, I love you.”
