Like most people who attended this year’s Met Gala, I booed and bewildered at the beautiful pieces worn by prominent celebrities. But ironically, the one that wasn’t shown as much as the exaggerated sets, was the one that represented American unity.
Le Grio pointed out New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who recalled that this country has more to worry about than to show off.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attended the 75th Met Gala for the first time wearing a white dress designed by Brother Vellies with the phrase “Tax the Rich” splashed across the back.
The words of the brain behind his statement:
Aurora James, Founder and Creative Director of Brother Vellies and Founder of 15 Percent Pledge – a pledge from retailers to devote 15% of their retail space to black-owned businesses – said Vogue, “We can never be too comfortable in our seats at the table once they have been given. We must always keep pushing ourselves, pushing our colleagues, pushing the culture forward and pushing the country forward. ”
“Fashion is changing, America is changing,” she noted. “And when it comes to that theme, I think Alexandria and I are a great embodiment of the language that fashion needs to consider adding to the general lexicon as we work towards a more sustainable, inclusive and sustainable language. empowered future.
Also, never to see the dress, I didn’t know that right outside the doors was a Black Lives Matter event. Their position was not televised or promoted, but many were arrested. Much like Alexandria, their fight was financial, with a sign stating:
“The NYPD has a total financial allocation of $ 11 billion per year,” the flyer read. “This money goes to the racist police who are destroying black and brown communities while people in difficulty do not get the resources they need. CARE, not COPS, is the answer.
The Met Gala bills itself as a trophy event. There are a lot of working class people who cannot afford their bills and struggle to keep food on the table, and we have to remember to represent them.
