Gossip Girl’s Thomas Doherty on Personal Style, TikTok Trends, and His Character’s Gendered Wardrobe
He’s by far the most interesting character: pansexual with a keen eye for anything that moves, whether he’s a teacher or a monogamous, relationship-bound best friend. Meanwhile, the costume department, led by Emmy Award-winning Eric Daman, gave him the best gear (that does mean something, considering the designer gear the rest of the cast has been in. been draped).
With Gossip Girl set in the fictional Constance Billard St Jude, school uniforms are the order of the day. Come evening, however, Doherty is dressed in 1970s-inspired cuts, including Cuban collared shirts, flared pants, and gold rings galore. Plus, he has a slicked back that gives Upper East Side Lothario a Brando edge.
We caught up with Doherty to discuss Wolfe’s wardrobe, his own off-screen outfit, and why he thinks Gossip Girl does a good thing for emerging designers.
My personal style is quite simple, it is very relaxed. It is made up of different elements – pieces from the 1950s revisited: white t-shirts, blue denim jackets, Converse sneakers, Ray-Ban aviators, open-neck shirts.
I have so many sweatpants. I like to relax.
James Dean and Marlon Brando got it right. These are the men I look for for style inspiration. I like what they did. It was laid back, but super cool.
