Niagara Fashion Outlets welcomes the return of Canadian shoppers

The mall’s general manager says that on weekends, up to 50% of shoppers are Canadian.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY – April has become a turning point for Fashion Outlets in Niagara, after Canada dropped what could be a costly testing requirement for vaccinated travelers.

“We’ve seen our Canadian buyers return by the hundreds, and we’re happy to see every single one of them,” said general manager John Doran.

Unvaccinated travelers should still test themselves.

On weekends, Doran says up to 50% of shoppers are Canadian. It’s essential for businesses there, who have seen much smaller crowds during the COVID pandemic but are counting on all shoppers to support them.

“There are about a million people in Erie and Niagara counties. There are approximately 8 million people in southern Ontario. The numbers alone tell us that the Southern Ontario consumer is an important part of our success,” said Doran.

Now that our neighbors to the north are back, they can once again enjoy some of their favorite things about Western New York.

“It’s nice to drive across for the day and go shopping,” said Woody Stallings of Hamilton, Ont. “(I enjoy) all the craft breweries here in the United States. … There are several restaurants.”

Toronto’s Karina Collado added, “(America has) different clothes, different fashion.”

A mother and daughter from Ottawa even seized an opportunity that would prevent them from traveling another five hours to Niagara Falls.

“My daughter (Jessica) is here for a cheerleading competition on the Canadian side, and we decided to go shopping, so we came to the States. We haven’t been able to come in a while,” said said Tracy Murray.

With some eased restrictions at the border already helping the mall and more shoppers coming to the mall over the Easter holidays, the hope is that things will only continue to move forward.

“The border restrictions, of course, hurt. But we had to do what was best for everyone’s health,” Doran said. “We survived it. I think we’re on the other side of COVID. … We’ve waited a long time for this day, and we’re so glad it’s here.”
