Inclusion has been a perennial buzzword in the fashion arena – we sat on the fringes of the plus-size debate and watched the first transgender models parade down the catwalk. Adaptive and disability-friendly clothing should always be available, despite all the progress made towards equality.
Big names in fashion like Tommy Hilfiger, Nike and Ugg have led the way with adaptive collections that celebrate everyone’s right to self-expression. Small independent retailers are also changing fashion with designs that are both functional and stylish.
Kim Kardashian not only uses different body types and ethnicities in her clothing campaigns, she also created an adaptive range in her shapewear brand, Skims.
With designs that feature magnetic closures for those who struggle with buttons, Velcro straps for easy use, and slip-on runners, a greater focus on fitting apparel could change a person’s entire experience with their wardrobe. There is still a long way to go, but thankfully change is coming.
